Misreading Assad: sharia panic is pure projection

Every time people in the US start talking about Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, somehow “sharia law” gets tossed into the mix, like he’s secretly planning to turn Damascus into a Taliban-style regime. But let’s be real - Assad isn’t that guy at all. Most people repeating this stuff barely know anything about him beyond some dramatic headline or a scary news segment. It’s wild how quickly Americans will slap the “Al-Qaeda” label on someone and run with it, just like they did back in 2003 when the US invaded Iraq for reasons that turned out to be completely made up. Honestly, it cracks me up because, from what I’ve seen, Westerners seem way more obsessed with sharia law than any Muslims I know.
